County Super-4 — Fuel Lift Pump

The mechanical lift pump that feeds the four-cylinder Ford diesel in the Super Major skid unit. It is driven off the engine and pushes fuel from the tank, through the filters, to the injection pump.

On a tractor that has stood for any length of time, the lift pump is one of the first things to let go: the diaphragm hardens, the non-return valves stick, and the whole fuel system needs draining and flushing before there is any point turning the engine over in anger.

Plan

  1. Drain and flush the tank, then check it for scale and water before refilling.
  2. Remove the pump, strip it, and assess the diaphragm, valves and body.
  3. Rebuild with a service kit if the casting is sound; source a replacement if it is not.

A hand-priming lever that has been worn smooth is usually a sign of an engine that has been hard to start for years — worth noting before blaming the injectors.
